I loved myself too much to keep being drained by the gram.

On intentional choices, filling your cup, and what happened when I deleted Instagram.

I deleted Instagram a couple of months ago.

It was an intentional choice because I felt the platform was draining me more than it was giving me.

This might not seem like a big deal to some, but to me, it kind of was. My finger literally muscle-memoried to the icon of the app on my phone (it doesn't anymore — yay!).

My husband, for example, has never had Instagram or any social media and so didn't really understand how much of a big deal it was. My mum, who LOVES Instagram (follow her @whereisesther), could not understand my decision.

After weeks of feeling pretty sh*t after scrolling the gram, I decided: TODAY IS THE DAY, BYE INSTAGRAM. 👋🏼

I didn't set myself a deadline before I could download it again. I just pressed delete. I think this took a lot of pressure off – because I wasn't counting down the days to reinstall the app, it was just gone. Intentionally.

And guess what – I don't miss it at all. Since deleting one app, I:

  • Lowered my screen time

  • Increased my reading time

  • Intentionally reach out and have conversations with friends (instead of just looking at their stories and assuming I'm all caught up!)

  • Read news articles intentionally (instead of having the same depressing things shown to me over and over again)

I'm filling my cup more. And that small act of deleting one app allows me to show up better for myself and those around me. I loved myself too much to keep being drained by the gram.

P.S. What's one app, habit, or situation that's draining you right now? What would it look like to make one small intentional choice about it this week?
