I ran a marathon with no running background

On self-belief, saying yes to hard things, and proving the doubters wrong.

Whenever the London Marathon comes around, I get a little emotional.

I ran the London Marathon in October 2022. With no running background. Just a belief that I loved challenges and could do anything I set my mind to.

And I did it. In 4 hours and 46 minutes.

It's probably one of the hardest things I've ever done (second only to giving birth - IYKYK)

And although I promptly gave up my running shoes after the marathon, I'm so so glad I had this experience.

I secured a spot in the race, as the British Red Cross offered my previous employer 5 places. I was the social impact ambassador in the office, so I was tasked with finding the 5 people to fill the spots.

One of the first conversations went a little like this:

"So, it's me and you, Nadia."

"Me? No way!! I don't run."

"...But you do love a challenge, come on!"

And that's all it took for me to say, "YES, I do love a challenge, let's go!"

My friends thought I'd lost my mind, and some colleagues laughed and let me know they didn't think I would finish. Joke’s on them.

I did it. With no evidence that I could finish the race, just a strong belief in myself.

It was more than a run for me; it was a reminder of the importance of self-belief.

It was a reminder of my strength, mainly mental strength and the power of saying, "Yes, I'm doing this." And continuously show up for myself.

And that's why I get emotional, because it was a crazy day where I proved to myself that I CAN do anything I put my mind to. Even run 42km.

If you know anyone running the race today, I'd love to give them free lifetime access to the Shine Bright Toolkit – no strings attached. Just a small token from me to remind them that they rock!

Nadia 💛

P.S. If you're running the marathon today, GOOOOOO FOR IT! And if you're in London, go and support the runners; I can't tell you what a difference the crowd makes!
